This is really the best blog ever.

Movies watched in October 2011 | November 1, 2011

The usual – a list, a line or two about each movie (non-spoilery).

191) Source Code (2011) – 8/10 – (10.2) – Good fun, excellent cast, neat story – felt the ending was a bit too neatly wrapped for my tastes, but still overall a good story.
192) The Devil’s Backbone (2001) – 7/10 – (10.3) – The first half of the movie is slow, but it’s worth watching despite that. Haunting, eerie, but not scary.
193) The Adjustment Bureau (2011) – 7/10 – (10.4) – Enjoyable popcorn flick, rather (too) neatly tied ending, but it’s a Hollywood blockbuster, so comes with the territory. Terence Stamp and Anthony Mackie (Harry) steal the show.
194) The Frankenstein Syndrome (2010) – INC – boring as fuck.
195) Ressurecting The Champ (2007) – 7/10 – Good movie, not remotely what I thought it was going to be, but still good.
196) The Perfect Host (2010) – 8/10 – (10.9) – Very nifty, trippy movie. DHP steals the show.
197) Red State (2011) – 6/10 – Ultimately falls flat, though some good performances – John Goodman and Michael Parks steal the show – make it enjoyable. Kevin Smith should stick to comedy.
198) The Countefeiters (2007) – 10/10 – (10.11) – Amazing movie, full of incredible performances – the dramatization of the real life story of the largest counterfeiting operation, Operation Bernhard – Jewish countefeiters working in a Nazi camp.
199) The Great Train Robbery (1979) – 8/10 – (10.13) – Very fun movie, loved the pacing, the plotting, the dialogue. Donald Sutherland steals this film from under Connery.
200) Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) – 10/10 – (10.14) – Most excellent, a lot of fun, great humour and action.
201) The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007) – 8/10 – interesting look into a strange subset.
202) Croupier (1998) – 6/10 – (10.15) River Song is naked! Okay, an interesting, understated film – bit slow at times, but still interesting enough.
203) The last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu (2009) – 6/10 – Silly but enjoyable enough.
204) Gomorra (2008) – INC – Boring, couldn’t watch the whole thing.
205) A Somewhat Gentle Man (2010) – 10/10 – Lovely, clever, incredibly compelling movie. Funny and dramatic, in a blend that American cinema can’t seem to achieve.
206) Red Riding: 1980 (2009) – 7/10 – (10.16) – The second part of the Red Riding trilogy, 6 years after the first part, this focuses on a police officer brought in to investigate the Yorkshire Ripper Murders, and the
actual investigation thereof to date. Great story, pacing and acting – the best of the trilogy.
207) Red Riding: 1983 (2009) – 6/10 – A bit convoluted with an excess of flashbacks, we finally learn that certain characters we’ve seen ephemerally are actually major pieces of the puzzle.
208) Much Ado About Nothing (1993) – 9/10 – (10.17) – most enjoyable movie, even with Keanu Reeves in it. Great performances, wonderful pacing, lovely dialogue. Makes you wonder how Branagh could’ve fucked up Hamlet so badly.
209) Rocky Balboa (2006) – 4/10 – (10.20) – Nothing special, I didn’t really see the point in it.
210) The Tapes (2011) – 3/10 – (10.23) – Wow, what a waste of time. There was no real story, no real plot. No swerve ending, nothing but some whiny kids being stupid and getting killed.
211) Cell 211 (2009) – 10/10 – (10.24) – Best prison movie since The Shawshank Redemption. Brutal, visceral and amazing.
212) The Eagle (2011) – 8/10 – (10.27) – Very good movie, much better than I expected, honestly. Good job by the cast, interesting story, nice blend of drama, action and humour.
213) The Usual Suspects (1995) RW – 10/10 – (10.30) – Gets better every time I watch it.
214) Ghost Story (1981) – 7/10 – Not bad, but nothing special. Good performances make it worth watching.
215) Them (Ils) (2006) – 5/10 – Not bad, nothing special. Based on true events, however, is a very disturbing fact.
216) Sheitan (2006) – 3/10 – My god, what a disturbingly stupid and ridiculous movie.
217) The Crow (1995) – 10/10 – One of my all time faves.
218) End of the Line (2007) – 6/10 – Not bad, definitely creepy and tense. A couple decent/enjoyable acting performances. There were elements that didn’t seem to have a real place, but other ‘n that, not bad.

Best new movie – easily, The Counterfeiters.
Best movie all around – The Crow, The Usual Suspects and The Counterfeiters in a three way tie
Worst movie – easily, Sheitan. Horrible, don’t bother. Crap. The 3 I gave it is too generous.
